Do modern coloured tattoo inks contain metal?

They can: it depends on the pigment and formula. Inks use organic and mineral pigments; some contain copper, iron or titanium, for example. A metal-containing compound is not the same as a metal shaving. Trace metals can also occur as impurities, including in black inks.

In the European Union, REACH restricts certain hazardous substances and requires ingredient and batch labelling. REACH compliance does not mean “zero metals” or no risk of allergy. Tell your artist about known allergies before the session so the specific ink can be checked and discussed with your dermatologist.

Does colour hurt more than black?

Not necessarily. Pain is not determined by pigment alone: placement, session length, repeated passes and your own sensitivity matter.

A densely coloured design may work more skin, including light colours and whites, than shading with diluted black. This work and accumulated time may make the session feel more intense. But black can also involve dense fills, and colour does not always require thicker needles. Needle choice depends on technique and the intended effect, not colour alone.
